Plan Your Visit to Accademia Gallery

The Accademia Gallery was originally established as the Academy of Drawing Arts by Cosimo I de’ Medici. The museum was renamed the Academy of Fine Arts by Pietro Leopoldo, who welcomed more variety of artworks into the gallery. The Michelangelo statue of “David” was moved to the Accademia Gallery in 1873 after residing in the Piazza della Signoria for over 300 years. The marble sculpture resembles the hero who slays Goliath in the Bible and was carved by Michelangelo in 1501.

This statue stands over 5 meters tall and is the jewel of the gallery. Many people consider it to be the ideal representation of male anatomy.

After Florence gained freedom from the Medici Family’s rule in 1737, “David” became a symbol of liberty. It is believed that the statue represents freedom in Florence after the family controlled the city for almost 300 years.
